Chords of Courage

Chords of Courage uses inclusive music education and structured music therapy to help children and young people with disabilities and neurodiverse needs learn, create and perform. Lessons are adapted to each learner and build musical skills, confidence, communication and participation.

Music, access and belonging

Activities include voice and singing, piano, guitar, percussion, movement and social interaction. Learners also rehearse with the Chords of Courage Choir and take part in performances. The programme follows a shared curriculum while giving instructors room to adapt activities to learners’ abilities, communication styles and pace.

Learning through performance

Voices Free Day and the Chords of Courage One-Year Anniversary Concert brought learners together to perform for families, caregivers and community members. The programme’s Q4 report describes continued progress in musical ability, confidence, communication, teamwork and self-expression. Performances offer learners a chance to share what they have learned and give families and communities a way to celebrate their work.

Creative work and community partnerships

During the reporting period, the choir continued rehearsals, recording for Chords of Courage Album 1 was completed and moved into mixing and mastering, and principal filming for the programme documentary was completed. Three learner and family impact stories were also recorded and entered editing. These are production updates from the Q4 report; any public stories, photographs or video are shared with appropriate consent and safeguarding protections.

The programme also carried out outreach and partnership development in Eldoret and Mombasa, introducing the Chords of Courage approach through music activities and performances. A programme monitoring and learning system helps the team review sessions, participation and progress, refine the curriculum and plan responsible growth.
